Commitment to reducing disposable plastics & Recycled plastic materials for Remote Control Units

Tech4home, a leading provider of innovative wireless remote control solutions for the home environment, has introduced Green22, a company-wide initiative aiming at reducing its ecological footprint. The strategy includes using recycled plastic materials and environmentally-friendly solutions for packaging. To fully commit to its vision, Tech4home has already partnered with selected customers.

In today’s world, plastics are literally everywhere. Especially when it comes to packaging, the amount of plastic which is only used once is more than worrying. In December 2019, the EU therefore has issued a ban prohibiting the future use of plastic plates, drinking straws and other disposable plastics.

In line with the new EU policy, Tech4home saw it as its duty to critically examine the packaging used for shipping the company’s products worldwide and make a significant first step towards embracing a holistic approach in the future.

We believe that today a business strategy has to be based on sustainable thinking to remain viable in the long term. Therefore, you have to change from a linear to a circular economy. For us, the circular economy is a true trigger for innovation that requires a completely new generation of materials. What’s more, we also have to think about changing our development and production processes.

Miguel Oliveira, CEO at Tech4home

In order to achieve the ambitious goals it has set itself, a dedicated team within Tech4home is already looking to put the first actions from the new sustainability strategy into practice. To adopt the EU directive and avoid the use of disposable plastic materials, the company is currently working on ABS recycled material certified to be used in the ABS plastic parts of the RCU.. Moreover, the remote control specialist is also experimenting with alternative packaging materials like sugar cane: Biologic materials like that are fully biodegradable and can be decomposed by the action of living organisms like bacteria or fungi. This means they don’t leave any residues behind. “This is what we’re striving for in the long run,” Graça Candido, Commercial Director, Tech4home, explains.

With its holistic vision, Tech4home is ready to set new standards in the entertainment technology industry. And they are not alone:

Our customers fully support our efforts to protect the environment and to work on ecologically-friendly packaging materials. It’s their valuable input that allows us to validate the different solutions and find the best one to suit our and their business needs.
